I was looking forward to the cycle, but also very nervous as never
done such a distance before or any climbs like the wicklow 200.
Started training seriously by spinning twice a week and going for
cycles on sundays ,but weather was bad came of bike with ice one sunday
morning.
come april started around the corrib sunday mornings 120km and also
once a week 50km.But still nervous about race will i be able to do
it, im i doing
enough .Then came the big day, weather looked good decided not to
bother with raingear, only to discover after 25km it started to rain
till 75km
also cool enough.but after break sun shone and the tough climbs also
came,it was very tough will i get of bike and walk or not changed
mind with every peddal.
But happy to say didnt get off, silly mind games what difference would
it really make, after 2nd break asked someone which way they said
left, after 5 minutes knew it was wrong way so turned around only to
meet 3 other cyclists coming towards me,said it was right way so follow
the crowd if somewhat small crowd, after 1 km we were lucky met someone
told us wrong way and told us how to get to avoca.we stuck together
more or less till end about 10 km before finish it lashed rain, when
Isaw sign 3km to finish I nearly cried with relief, in the end we
did 203km no short cut for sure i read most people only clocked 195km
so our mistake extra 8km which may not seem a lot but aaahhh. Anyway
1st wicklow over still dont know if I'll do it next year. But have
to say I never felt as good when I finished 10 hours 10minutes after
breaks about 9hours 30minutes on bike not bad for first time im afraid
i wouldnt beat it next year. but now im part of the wicklow200 club
who cares.
